The beautiful detail of domesticity

Jane Kenyon was an American poet and translator who, during her short lifetime, published four books of poetry.

According to the Poetry Foundation, Kenyon’s work is “remembered for her stoic portraits of domestic life.” Nature and the seasons and cycles that she witnessed around her home in New Hampshire are strong influences on her words.

She became the Poet Laureate for New Hampshire in 1995.

Let Evening Come is one of her best known poems. It documents the final moments of a day, as the sun goes down, in beautiful detail.

Writing

Write a reflection on Let Evening Come, perhaps with a counter stance that draws on observations from the beginning of the day, welcoming in the rising sun and things coming to life.
