Dark Angels Note 72
Dearest Friends,
Welcome back to our weekly Dark Angels Note.
This week talented brand writer and fellow Dark Angel, Kendra Futcher, opens the door to her writing room.
1. Tell us about something you're working on right now.
Work-wise, my writing is typically eclectic. This week it’s been a brochure for The World Gold Council, a sassy tone of voice for a beauty start-up and strategy and tone of voice for an independent Bristol school.I’ve also been exploring my own voice over the past year, spurred on by the Dark Angels Advanced Writing course. Our recent homework was a short piece entitled ‘Journey’, and I wrote a piece about a pilgrimage I was about to make with my Dad to Sligo. It was interesting writing how I imagined the trip to be and then reflecting on how accurate it was. I’m enjoying the challenge of writing for myself as well as for clients.
2. Can you recommend something for us to read?
I love the poems of Rupi Kaur. She sculpts language like it’s a piece of stone. I’m also reading Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell, which is an incredibly raw and moving story.
3. What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever read or received?
The authenticity test: read what you write aloud – does it make you want to put on a different voice? If so, it’s not believable.
4. Share one thing you do when you get stuck.
Step away from what I’m writing for more than an hour. Ideally, I would then get out of my head by doing something physical and rhythmic like yoga or swimming.
5. What’s your desert island book and why?
I’m torn between going with something philosophical like The Art of Happiness by the Dalai Lama to support my need to soul search as I’m faced with life stranded alone on the desert island, or something entertaining and irreverent like How to be a Woman by Caitlin Moran. I don’t think fiction would cut it in this situation.Brilliant, Kendra. Rupi Kaur is a super recommendation. Thank you.
